WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS, by Lynn Austin, Tyndale Fiction, Sept. 3, 2024, Hardcover, $16.99 (young adult/ new adult/ adult fiction)

A newlywed discovers an orphan outside her door in Waiting for Christmas, a Gilded Age Christmas novella by Lynn Austin.

The year is 1901 and the hustle and bustle of the holidays is descending on New York’s Fifth Avenue.

For the first time in her privileged life, Adelaide Forsythe won’t be swept up in it. She couldn’t be happier about the prospect of a quieter Christmas. That’s not to say her transition from Miss to Mrs. has been without challenge. Though she doesn’t regret marrying for love instead of wealth, she can barely light the hearth or cook more than burnt toast. She feels woefully unprepared to run her own household.

Then, on the first Sunday of Advent, winter winds bring change through two unlikely means: a young orphan boy, hiding near Adelaide’s front steps, and a seasoned housekeeper who seems too good to be true.

The boy, Jack, claims he isn’t an orphan at all and is desperate to reunite his family. Adelaide and her husband Howard work tirelessly to solve the riddle of Jack’s story, while Adelaide’s new endeavors open her eyes to a world beyond her past experience―and all the challenge and possibility it holds. As Christmas approaches, small glimmers of wonder light the way toward the answers Adaleide seeks and the most miraculous gift of all. —Synopsis provided by Tyndale Fiction

Waiting for Christmas is a companion to All My Secrets, also by Lynn Austin, which was published in February 2024. While Waiting for Christmas does stand alone, I did become curious about certain references, and I’m sure I would have enjoyed it more if I had read All My Secrets first.

Waiting for Christamas is a cozy Christmas tale that leans heavily into the characters’ faith. Tyndale is a Christian publisher, so that should come as no surprise here. It’s not over the top, nor is it overly preachy. And it does feel as though it’s steeped deeply in who the characters are.

Austin’s writing is warm and inviting, and her setting is clear and accessible. You can easily picture the action playing out like a Hallmark movie. In that sense, it’s clear that there aren’t going to be any big surprise endings — it’s fairly predictable — but enjoyable nonetheless.

Waiting for Christmas is considered adult fiction, but I would have no problem handing it to a young adult or new adult. It’s a fun option as we head into the Christmas shopping season.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS: OR ACCOUNT OF A VISIT FROM ST. NICHOLAS, by Clement C. Moore and Matt Tavares, Candlewick, Sept. 13, 2022, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-7)

*Christmas

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.”

Once upon a time, children imagined St. Nicholas as a stern, skinny bishop who was as likely to dole out discipline as Christmas presents. But thanks to the poem “Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas”—written by Clement C. Moore in 1822 and published the next year in the Troy Sentinel — a plumper, merrier St. Nick was born, transformed into the sleigh-riding, chimney-diving jolly old elf we now call Santa Claus. With monochrome illustrations by Matt Tavares that are true to pre-Victorian times, this reissue of the holiday favorite ’Twas the Night Before Christmas Or Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas honors the poem’s original language in a definitive keepsake volume. —Synopsis provided by Candlewick

This charming version of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas features black-and-white, meticulously drawn illustrations. The characters are emotive and the scenes delightful. This is one of the better versions of this classic tale.

PAGES OF MUSIC, by Tony Johnston and Tomie dePaola, Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books, Sept. 13, 2022, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 4-8)

*Christmas

First published in 1988, this picture book set in Sardinia features refreshed illustrations by the beloved and award-winning Tomie dePaola and tells of the giving and sharing of music on a very special Christmas morning.

Long ago, a painter and her son, Paolo, visited the poor but beautiful island of Sardinia and a shepherd shared with them his bread called foglia de musica, pages of music. When the mother offered to pay, the shepherd took his musical pipe and filled the air with music so sweet that Paolo danced and sang with joy.

Many years later, Paolo, now a gifted composer, returns to the island with his entire orchestra on Christmas morning to share with the shepherds his own “pages of music” — a song of a night long ago, a blazing star, and a child born in a manger. —Synopsis provided by Simon and Schuster

Though on its face, Pages of Music doesn’t appear to be a Christmas story, it is. Through dePaola’s stylistic illustrations and Johnston’s engaging text, readers will learn the value of the gift of music.

A teen girl gets the perfect second try at a first kiss in this hilarious, romp-filled young adult romantic comedy perfect for fans of Jenna Evans Welch and Hallmark Christmas movies.

Their holiday gift empire also includes the Santa School, which was founded by Francie’s beloved grandpa, who recently passed away.

Francie’s always loved working in the shop, but lately Aunt Carole has been changing everything with her ideas for too-slick, Hollywood-inspired Santas and horrible holiday-themed employee uniforms. But this winter is about more than preserving the magic of Christmas. Francie is saving up for a car and angling to kiss the cute boy who works at the tree lot next door—hopefully it will be good enough to wipe her fiasco of a first kiss from her memory.

THE ROBIN AND THE FIR TREE, by Hans Christian Andersen and Jason Jameson, Templar, November 16, 2021, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 3-7)

In a forest far away from the hustle and bustle of town grows the Fir Tree. The meadow he lives in is beautiful and serene, but the Fir Tree yearns for the excitement of the outside world. His friend the Robin brings him gifts and tells him stories of the places she’s been, the people she’s flown over, and the many things men construct out of wood. The Fir Tree dreams of adventure and wishes to be something more. He imagines a new life as a ship’s mast, traveling the world by sea. When men come to the meadow with axes one day and cut him down, the Fir Tree is eager to be chosen for a new purpose. But the Robin worries. What will become of her strong, beautiful friend?

This retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen story The Fir Tree is one of my favorite holiday offerings this year. I could spend an hour just gazing at the exquisite illustrations. Each one has beautifully stylized details that truly make them special. And there’s a lovely touch of hope that runs throughout.

THE FIRST CHRISTMAS, by Phillips Brooks, Lewis H. Redner, et al., Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books, Sept. 28, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages  4-8)

From the great-grandson of renowned folk art painter Grandma Moses comes a picture book about the first Christmas. Based on the lyrics of the beloved carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” this picture book in Will Moses’s acclaimed folk art style is unlike any other.

The First Christmas is a great choice for families that want to focus on the religious side of Christmas. Moses’s illustrations pair perfectly with the carol, giving readers a sense of the place where Jesus was born.

RED AND GREEN AND BLUE AND WHITE, by Lee Wind and Paul O. Zelinsky, Levine Querido, Oct. 19, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-7)

Inspired by a true story, this is a tale of a community that banded together to spread light. It’s a holiday season that both Isaac, whose family is Jewish, and Teresa, whose family is Christian, have looked forward to for months! They’ve been counting the days, playing in the snow, making cookies, drawing (Teresa) and writing poems (Isaac). They enjoy all the things they share, as well as the things that make them different. But when Isaac’s window is smashed in the middle of the night, it seems like maybe not everyone appreciates “difference.”

Too often, we see separate religions as the things that divide us. Red and Green and Blue and White shows how they can unite us. This heartfelt story celebrates the true spirit that can permeate the holiday season — if we let it.

ROBIN ROBIN, by Dan Ojari, Mikey Please, et al., Red Comet Press, Nov. 2, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

A chirpy young robin is adopted by a family of mice in the joyful retelling of the new animation holiday musical special from Netflix and Aardman Animation.

When her egg fortuitously rolls into a garbage dump, Robin is raised by a loving family of mice. As she grows up, her differences become more apparent. Robin sets off on the heist to end all heists to prove to her family that she can be a really good mouse – but ends up discovering who she really is.

Robin Robin may also be a Netflix special, but the book stands on its own. This charming tale about a somewhat clumsy robin and her adventures in the who-man’s house is one that will have readers giggling aloud. Kids will be drawn to the sweet illustrations and parents will enjoy reading it aloud.

Though set at Christmas, the holiday is never specifically mentioned. Rather it’s the themes of diversity, community, inclusion and acceptance throughout that celebrate the spirit of the holiday.

A Christmas Too BigA CHRISTMAS TOO BIG, by Colleen Madden, Two Lions; Bilingual edition, Nov. 2, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Kerry’s family goes completely berserk with Christmas every year. Starting the day after Thanksgiving, her home becomes a whirlwind of lights, music, and elves, elves, elves! Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming.

This year, Kerry is desperate for some peace and quiet. Heading outdoors, she realizes a lot of her neighbors are having a Christmas too big. But not Mrs. Flores. She’s having a much quieter Christmas, complete with decorations and music from the country where she used to live. It sparks an idea: maybe there’s a way for Kerry to create her own Christmas traditions. But will anyone in her crazy Christmas house understand?

A Christmas Too Big feels a bit overwhelming at first. As author/illustrator Colleen Madden follows the family merrymaking, you, as the reader, get a very true sense of how Kerry feels. Then, everything changes. With one turn of the page, you enter a quiet, calm place. You can take a breath.

With one simple transition, Madden conveys a host of emotions. It’s a fantastic juxtaposition. As Kerry returns home, she realizes that by creating her own tradition, she can take back some of Christmas for herself.

CARLA AND THE CHRISTMAS CORNBREAD, by Carla Hall and Cherise Harris, Denene Millner Books/Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, Nov. 2, 2021, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Christmas is Carla’s favorite holiday of the year. She goes to her grandparents’ house and eats grandma’s special recipe — a perfectly delicious cornbread. She listens to her grandpa Doc’s marvelous stories about traveling the world. And, best of all, she spends lots of time with her family.

But when Carla accidentally takes a bite out of Santa’s sugar cookie, she thinks she’s ruined Christmas. How will Santa know to stop at their house if they don’t leave him a midnight snack? With her grandmother’s help, Carla comes up with a plan, but will it be enough to save Christmas?

In a season where there are a lot of Christmas on-offs, Carla and the Christmas Cornbread feels like a complete story. Characters are developed, and the story — written by a trained chef — has a point to it. It’s lovely to read about one family’s Christmas traditions and the inclusion of the cornbread recipe at the end is a nice touch.

Injury and all, Comet sets out to deliver the presents, crisscrossing the globe from Japan and Egypt to France and Cleveland. After a run-in with a goose, a near miss with a minivan, and too many chimney crash landings to count, can Comet hobble his way into pulling off a Christmas miracle? —Synopsis provided by Two Lions

Comet the Unstoppable Reindeer has a lot going for it. This comical tale is written by the award-winning creator of the New York Times bestselling series Dear Dumb Diary and Franny K. Stein as well as the popular It’s Happy Bunny brand. It offers the same humor Benton’s fans have come to expect.

Bright, cartoon-style illustrations draw young readers in, adding to the comedic punch. And bouncing text makes it fun to read aloud. There are a few rhyming stretches that you might stumble on during the first read, but they seem to settle upon further readings.

If you’re looking for a fun holiday read, Comet the Unstoppable Reindeer is an entertaining choice.

Mistletoe loves everything about Christmas–the twinkling lights, the cookies for Santa, and, most of all, the gently falling snow. Her best friend, Norwell, is an elephant who likes sitting by the fire and watching the snow from the comfort of his cozy house. On one particularly snowy walk, Mistletoe stops to appreciate the beauty and peace of a snow-covered world. She knows Norwell would love it too… if he weren’t so afraid of the cold. Then she has an idea! Mistletoe knits from morning to night–when she’s reading, when she’s baking, and even in the bath (which isn’t easy). By the time Christmas morning arrives, she puts down her knitting needles. Her gift for Norwell is ready–and it is perfect. —Synopsis provided by Schwartz & Wade

MING’S CHRISTMAS WISHES, by Susan L. Gong and Masahiro Tateishi, Shadow Mountain Publishing; Illustrated edition, Sept. 29, 2020, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 5-8)

Ming wishes for three things at Christmas. First, to sing in the school Christmas choir. Second, to have a Christmas tree like the one in the department store window. And third, to feel she belongs somewhere.

As a daughter of immigrants in 1930s California, Ming is often treated differently than other children at school. She’s pointedly not invited to sing in the Christmas choir. At home, when Ming lobbies her parents for a Christmas tree, her mother scolds her for trying to be American. Ming doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere: she’s not quite American enough at school, not quite Chinese enough at home.

Seeing his daughter’s unhappiness, Pop takes her into the mountains to visit a wise old friend. Always happy for an adventure with her kind father, Ming hopes to persuade Pop to bring home a mountain pine to be their Christmas tree. But he has something else in mind, something that will help Ming draw strength from nature, from their Chinese heritage, and from deep and enduring family ties. —Synopsis provided by Shadow Mountain Publishing

I’m always on the lookout for books that celebrate different cultures and customs. This is a story about being true to your roots while building new traditions as well.

THE HANUKKAH MAGIC OF NATE GADOL, by Arthur A. Levine and Kevin Hawkes, Candlewick; Illustrated edition, Sept. 8, 2020, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 5-8)

Nate Gadol is a great big spirit with eyes as shiny as golden coins and a smile that is lantern bright. He can make anything last as long as it is needed, like a tiny bit of oil that must stretch for eight nights, a flower that needs to stay fresh to cheer up someone ailing, or a small lump of chocolate that grows to allow the Glasers to treat their children over the holiday and, during a harsh winter when medicine is needed more than sweets, spurs them to share what little they have with the O’Malleys. This is a mythical, magical take on the way Jewish families came to give and receive gifts over Hanukkah, just as their Christian neighbors do at Christmas, thanks to a loving spirit named Nate Gadol working behind the scenes—together with a certain jolly old soul. —Synopsis provided by Candlewick

We celebrate Christmas in our home, but focus on other faith traditions as well. When my daughter was 3, she insisted we light a menorah. This book offers a nice bridge between the two faiths. Beautiful gold accents throughout the illustrations take this one over the top.

If you follow me on Instagram, then you know my family and I have been working on a special project — a book-themed Christmas tree.

My family and I decorated this tree in honor of my brother (who passed away in 2015) and my mom (who died in 2018). Both were avid readers.

Our tree is decorated with ornaments and a star topper made from the pages of books. Mini books also correspond to $1000 worth of books under the tree. We covered all the bases with the books. They’re all family favorites and cater to all ages. The books range from The Hungry Caterpillar and The Questioneers to The Giver and Encyclopedia Brown to The Princess Academy and Fablehaven to The Chronicles of Prydain and LOTR to Mary Poppins and The Wheel of Time.

We hope the tree will not only bring joy to fellow book lovers but will make a real difference in the life of a child. Why? This tree will be auctioned off at the Festival of Trees. Proceeds benefit children at Primary Children’s Hospital, which is located in Salt Lake City.

My brother was sick most of his life and spent a lot of time at Primary Children’s Hospital. When he was there, books were his escape.

?Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees features uniquely decorated Christmas trees, wreaths, playhouses, centerpieces, quilts and gingerbread houses. Shops are filled with dolls, handmade crafts and quilts, freshly baked cookies and candies, an endless assortment of freshly-made fudge, hot scones, and cinnamon rolls.

Trees are sold through an auction on Opening Night, which is an event that is held the evening before Festival of Trees opens to the public. This year, the festival is open to the general public Wednesday, Dec. 4, through Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, from 10am – 9pm. You can buy tickets here.

Funds raised at Festival of Trees are a “A Gift of Love” to children at Primary Children’s Hospital. More than $2.8 million was raised by Festival of Trees in 2018.

?Primary Children’s Hospital

Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City is a Level I pediatric trauma center that cares for children with complex illness and injury, including organ transplants and complex birth defects. The hospital serves children in Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

Primary Children’s Hospital ensures that every child receives the best medical care possible, regardless of race, religion, or ability to pay.

Santa is ready to leave on Christmas Eve, but he can’t find the reindeer anywhere. Dasher is busy dashing, Donner is dozing, and Cupid is crooning. It isn’t until Santa remembers their annual tradition—reading a Christmas story together—that the reindeer are ready.

If you’re already a fan of Will Hillenbrand’s books, then you’ll already know this book is a must-buy. The illustrations are charming and feel as if they’re straight off a Christmas card. The story is sweet, and the plot mimics childhood nighttime routines

I SPY CHRISTMAS, by Jean Marzollo and Walter Wick, Cartwheel Books, Sept. 3, 2019, Hardcover, $14.99 (ages 3-5)

What is hidden in Santa’s workshop? And what do you see under the Christmas tree?

Walter Wick’s captivating photographs paired with Marzollo’s clever rhyming puzzles will have readers of all ages mesmerized.

The suggested age range for I Spy Christmas is 3-5, but the whole family will enjoy this book. Some of the items are a challenge to find, and we’ve turned it into a sort of contest to see who can find the most items in a certain amount of time or who can find something first. The rhymes add to the festive ambiance. I can see this book being a family favorite for years to come.

LONG AGO, ON A SILENT NIGHT, by Julie Berry and Annie Won, Orchard Books, Sept. 3, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3 and up)

Long ago, in a dusty barn, a mother took a child in her arms, wrapped him snug, made his bed in the hay. He was her gift that Christmas Day. There’s no sweeter gift than a life so new. My best gift, little one, is you.

This unconventional Nativity story is a beautifully illustrated look at a mother’s love for her child. The text parallels that love with Jesus’ birth.

In this unique book, readers get to see how Duncan, the crayons, and their families celebrate the holidays. With real, folded letters from the Crayons that you can pull from their envelopes and read, games, punch-out ornaments, a poster, and a pop-up tree.

This is perfect gift for fans of The Day the Crayons Quit and The Day the Crayons Came Home. The suggested age range on this is 3-7, but younger hands will need help manipulating the letters and envelopes.

THE TREE THAT’S MEANT TO BE, by Yuval Zommer, Doubleday Books for Young Readers, Sept. 24, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-7)

A small, crooked fir tree is left all alone after the others near it in the forest are chosen by families as Christmas to bring home. DASHER: HOW A BRAVE LITTLE DOE CHANGED CHRISTMAS FOREVER, by Matt Tavares, Candlewick, Sept. 10, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Dasher is an adventurous young reindeer with a wish in her heart. She spends her days with her family under the hot sun in a traveling circus, but she longs for a different life — one where there is snow beneath her hooves and the North Star above her head. One day, when the opportunity arises, Dasher seizes her destiny and takes off in pursuit of the life she wants to live. It’s not long before she meets a nice man in a red suit with a horse-drawn sleigh — a man named Santa. And soon, with the help of a powerful Christmas wish, nothing will be the same.

Dasher is a fun look at the legend of Santa and his reindeer. I was thrown a little when Dasher is revealed to be a doe, but after a quick Google search, I found that does can in fact grow antlers. That aside, it’s a sweet story and the illustrations are gorgeous.

SANTA MOUSE, by Michael Brown and Elfrieda De Witt, Little Simon; Reprint edition, Sept. 17, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-6)

In this holiday story, meet a tiny mouse with no name who is blessed with a large imagination and a generous spirit. He lives a very lonely life in a very big house. Yet he dearly loves Christmas and one Christmas Eve he surprises Santa Claus with a most unusual present.

How does this small mouse with a big heart become Santa’s special helper? This sweet little tale oozes with charm. It embodies that warm old-fashioned feeling the holidays bring.

TOMIE DEPAOLA’S CHRISTMAS TREE BOOK, by Tomie dePaola, Holiday House, Sept. 10, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

While picking out their Christmas tree, a couple of curious kids start to wonder where Christmas trees came from. Who invented the first one? How did they become so popular? And how have they changed over the years?

Answers to those questions come from children’s author Tomie dePaola. dePaola’s stylized illustrations are bright and inviting. The facts, history and stories are fascinating and child appropriate.

THE LEGEND OF OLD BEFANA: AN ITALIAN CHRISTMAS STORY, by Tomie dePaola, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers; Reprint edition, Sept. 17, 2019, Softcover, $7.99 (ages 4-8)

“Every year , on the Feast of the Three Kings, January the sixth, Old Defana visits all the children of Italy and leaves them candies, cookies, and gifts. It is said that she is searching for the Christ Child. There are many stories about Old Befana and how she began her search. This is one of them.”

Every morning and every afternoon, Old Befana sweeps with her broom. “Cranky old lady,” the children say. “She is always sweeping!” Sweep, sweep, sweep. But when a brilliant star glows in the eastern sky one night, and Old Befana encounters the glorious procession of three kings on their way to Bethlehem, her world will never be the same.

First published in 1980, The Legend of Old Befana has become a holiday classic. This is a lovely tale that embodies the Christmas spirit. It’s a good option for families looking to add more religious books to their holiday collections.

THE CHRISTMAS DOLL, by Jason F. Wright and Howard Lyon, Shadow Mountain, Sept. 30, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Christmas is fast approaching, but in the Saxton home, there is no money for gifts. Could there still be something special for Gail underneath the tree? In The Christmas Doll author Jason F. Wright shares a true story from the life of Gail Saxton Miller, billionaire businesswoman and owner of the Utah Jazz NBA team. But Gail’s childhood was vastly different from her life now—facing poverty in the 1940s, the Saxton family made ends meet by turning their small home into rental apartments and made do with hand-me-downs and secondhand items. However, their humble circumstances didn’t stop the Saxtons from being rich in what mattered most: self-less acts of love, the rewards of a job well done, and the hope and renewal we can feel through Jesus Christ. All of these lessons come together at Christmastime, when Gail learns of love and sacrifice through a single, precious gift.

ANGELA’S CHRISTMAS, by Frank McCourt and Raúl Colón, Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books; Reissue edition, Sept. 17, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-8)

Pulitzer Prize recipient Frank McCourt shares the story of his mother’s childhood Christmas in this book, previously published as Angela and the Baby Jesus. Angela is 6-years-old and worries for the baby Jesus on the altar of St. Joseph’s church in Limerick. December nights are damp and cold, and the church is dark at night. How can the baby Jesus’ mother leave him in the manger without even a blanket to cover him? The baby Jesus surely needs Angela’s help, even if she is not allowed to go on the altar, especially by herself. Filled with the characters, incident, and detail that have made Frank McCourt internationally renowned and beloved, Angela’s Christmas is a timeless story of real life—in all of its joy, innocence, and incongruity. A story for all generations to enjoy and cherish.

Amid the chaos and confusion of the airport, he accidentally boards the wrong plane and ends up alone (again!) in New York City. LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE, by Jessica Courtney-Tickle, Big Picture Press, Oct. 16, 2018, Boardbook, $15.99 (ages 2-5)

One white and snowy night, a little Christmas tree stands alone in the forest. Everything is white and lifeless. As the night goes on, there are signs of life: an orange fox, a red-breasted robin, a cloud of fireflies. By the end of the book, the little Christmas tree is transformed by nature.

This is one of the prettier lift-the-flap books to cross my doorstep. I love that this is a Christmas book that celebrates nature rather than presents. It would make a lovely addition to any Christmas collection.

ALL ABOARD! THE CHRISTMAS TRAIN, by Nichole Mara and Andrew Kolb, Harry N. Abrams, Oct. 16, 2018, Boardbook $9.99 (ages 2-5)

Folding out car by car, this accordion-style book takes readers on a tour of Santa’s Christmas train. Each car has lots to see—elves making toys, penguins playing, reindeer preparing for the big day—as Santa searches for his missing boot. With a running landscape dotted with objects for children to find and count on the back of the book, All Aboard! The Christmas Train is an interactive ride from beginning to end.

This follow-up to Let’s Ride a Train is just as enjoyable as its predecessor. You’ll need room to spread out with this one, but you’ll be glad for it once you climb aboard the Christmas train.

DECKED OUT FOR CHRISTMAS! by Ethan Long, Harry N. Abrams, Oct. 16, 2018, Boardbook $9.99 (ages 2-4)

The mice at the North Pole are getting ready to deck the halls with all the essentials. They’ve got ornaments and twinkle lights, candy canes and popcorn garlands. One by one, the mice unpack all the merriest decorations, but soon the items become a bit unexpected. Hot cocoa? Fuzzy dice? A map? In a festive twist, it’s revealed that it’s not a tree the mice are decorating, but Santa’s sleigh, all decked out for Christmas Eve!

This sweet, but simple, book will appeal to the youngest of readers. It’s sparse text and bright illustrations are sure to bring giggles and smiles.

MY LITTLE GIFTS: A BOOK OF SHARING, by Jo Witek and Christine Roussey, Harry N. Abrams, Sept. 11, 2018, Hardcover, $16.99 (ages 2-4)

There are many types of gifts. You can give a big, shiny, wrapped gift on Christmas morning, but you can also give the gifts of your help or your time. You can bake a cake for your parents or share what you learned in school with your little sister. You can help a friend unravel a knotty bracelet or smile at a stranger who looks sad. With a spirit of generosity, you’ll find you have many gifts to give to the world—and that giving can be even more fulfilling than receiving. Featuring a die-cut cover and interior flaps throughout, My Little Gifts celebrates the gift of giving.

While this is not specifically a Christmas book, it’s prefect for reading during the holiday season. My Little Gifts is the latest in the Growing Hearts series from Jo Witek and Christine Roussey. I recommend any and all of the books from the series. The writing is heartfelt and the illustrations charming.

COMING HOME, by Kerry Hyndman and Michael Morpurgo, Candlewick, Oct. 23, 2018, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-7)

A plucky robin, lost and alone, sets out on an epic journey, guided only by a call in his heart saying “come home!” He wills his wings to beat faster, lifting him over great mountains and dark forests, through blinding blizzards and rolling fog, across the wide, wild sea. Can he find his way back to his family in time for Christmas?

The text of Coming Home is more sophisticated than most picture books for young children. The poetic narrative may be difficult for those with short attention spans, but offers enough context that most will understand it. Beautiful illustrations bring prose to life in this gorgeous book.

I GOT THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT, by Connie Schofield-Morrison and Frank Morrison, Bloomsbury Children’s Books, Sept. 4, 2018, Hardcover, $16.99 (ages 3-6)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and a mother and daughter are enjoying the sights and sounds of the holiday season. The little girl hears sleigh bells ringing and carolers singing. She smells chestnuts roasting–CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH!–and sees the flashing lights of the department store windows–BLING! BLING! BLING! She spreads the spirit of giving wherever she goes. And when she reaches Santa, she tells him her Christmas wish–for peace and love everywhere, all the days of the year.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS: THE DANCE OF THE REALMS, by Calliope Glass and Marco Bucci, Disney Press, Sept. 18, 2018, Hardcover, $16.99 (ages 3-5)

With a foreword written by celebrated dancer Misty Copeland, this picture book brings The Nutcracker and the Four Realms to life in a brand-new way.

This version of The Nutcracker is not the one you grew up with. Elements are the same, but it’s almost an entirely different story. This book, as with two more listed below, have been released in conjunction with the Disney film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. I have not seen the film so I can’t compare the book to it. The illustrations here have an impressionist feel to them that add to the dreamlike quality of Clara’s dream. It will never hold up to the source material, but if you can put it aside, this book is nice.

MRS. CLAUS TAKES THE REINS, by Sue Fliess and Mark Chambers, Two Lions, Sept. 18, 2018, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-7)

It’s Christmas Eve morning, and Santa Claus is still in bed! He’s feeling stuffy and sneezy and slow as a yeti. Will Christmas have to be canceled? Not this year! Because Mrs. Claus is ready to take the reins in Santa’s place. With a plan in mind, Mrs. Claus assembles the crew, maps out the route, and preps the sleigh. Then, with a snap of the reins, she shoots off into the night. Delivering gifts all over the world without Santa’s magic won’t be easy, but Mrs. Claus proves she has some holiday sparkle of her own…

Mrs. Claus Takes the Reins is a delightful romp around the globe. Sue Fliess’ rhythmic text rolls off the tongue, and her imagination makes you grin. Mark Chambers’ illustrations are bright and cheerful and bring giggles throughout. Not only do I love how this book brings Mrs. Claus to the foreground, but also that it shows a married couple sharing responsibility with them both stepping forward when needed.

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET: A STORYBOOK EDITION OF THE CHRISTMAS CLASSIC, by Valentine Davies Estate and Susanna Leonard Hill, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, Oct. 2, 2018, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 4-9)

For a little girl named Susan, Christmas could be any other day. She doesn’t believe in Santa Claus or magic or miracles of any kind. Then one day she meets Kriss Kringle. As she doubtfully tells him the gifts she most wishes for, deep down Susan finds herself hoping that just maybe, he is the real thing. Based on the original holiday classic, Miracle on 34th Street is a heartwarming story about generosity, imagination, and the spirit of Christmas.

Who hasn’t seen the classic movie Miracle on 34th Street? This picture book version is almost a scene-for-scene carbon copy. The illustrations are beautiful, and this paired-down version still has charm. I think I’ll always prefer the move, but this book is a great introduction to little ones that may not want to watch the film.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS READ-ALONG STORYBOOK AND CD, by Disney Book Group, Disney Press, Sept. 18, 2018, Softcover, $6.99 (ages 4-7)

Follow along in this Read-Along Storybook and journey to a strange and magical world where a young girl named Clara meets a soldier named Phillip, a gang of mice, and regents who preside over the Realms. Complete with word-for-word narration, original character voices, sound effects, and stills from the film itself, there’s no better way to revisit The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Transport back into a world alive with song, dance, and the magic of storytelling!

Does anyone own a CD player anymore? If they do, they probably will enjoy the CD included with this book. Since I only have a CD player on my laptop, I’d have to save it to iTunes and let my daughter listen to it through another device. A digital download option would be nice. Otherwise, this book gives you a fine overall feel for the movie.
