PIGLETTE, by Katelyn Aronson and Eva Byrne, Viking Books for Young Readers, May 26, 2020, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-7)
A particular pig moves to the big city and discovers home is where her heart is in Piglette.
Piglette isn’t your typical pig. While her brothers and sisters love chaos, Piglette loves perfection. She’d rather pamper herself rather than roll in the mud, and she finds pastries more pleasing than slop. So, when she gets the chance to go to Paris, Piglette makes the move. But as much as Piglette loves the perfume shop where she works, she misses the pleasant scents of home more.
Piglette is a sweet picture book that celebrates the ties we have to home and the people who live there. It’s not an overly complicated book, but it does have a lot of heart.
Katelyn Aronson’s text is accessible and wakes up the senses. Eva Byrne’s illustrations are charming. Piglette’s personality shines through her adept artwork.
I would drop the age recommendation down to 2-6, as it’s probably too simple for a 7-year-old, but I can see 2-year-olds being enchanted. My 6-year-old enjoyed it well enough, but after one read, she moved on to something more challenging.
