A FIELD GUIDE TO LEAFLINGS: GUARDIANS OF THE TREES, by Owen Churcher and Niamh Sharkey, Templar Fiction, Aug. 1, 2023, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 5-7)
Discover the secret guardians of trees in A Field Guide to Leaflings, a magical new picture book by Owen Churcher and Niamh Sharkey.
Among the branches and roots of some of our planet’s most important inhabitants live the leaflings. These tiny creatures protect trees and help manage their interactions, their cycles and tell their stories. In A Field Guide to Leaflings, meet leaflings from all over the world and the trees they live with.
Travel from an ancient holly tree in Ireland, to a cherry blossom in Japan, and climb to the highest branches of a giant redwood in California. The leaflings will show you how trees breathe, make food, support many forms of life and what they mean to people all around the world. —Synopsis provided by Templar Fiction
A Field Guide to Leaflings reminds me of the Gnomes book, by Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet that I read as a child. The former is simpler and shorter, but it holds that same sort of magic that enthralled me when I was younger.
This interactive book features full-page spreads that are both horizontal and vertical. Flaps and pull-out cards offer up natural pauses and provide more information. And text is provided in small snippets, allowing readers to jump around the page and throughout the book. Charming illustrations tie everything together. The final two pages offer tips on how to observe the world around us.
A Field Guide to Leaflings is an imaginative look at trees that will captivate readers young and old.
